What is Electrical Safety Month?

Oh, joyous occasion! May is here, and you know what that means - it's National Electrical Safety Month! Get ready to celebrate by wrapping yourself in rubber and practicing your lightning rod pose.

The Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI) started this initiative to educate us on the potential hazards of electricity and promote safe electrical practices. Because nothing says "celebrate" like learning about electrical safety.

Did you know electrical accidents can cause severe injuries, property damage, and even death? According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), electrical failures or malfunctions were the second leading cause of U.S. home fires between 2014 and 2018, resulting in an average of 43,000 fires and 430 deaths yearly. But don't worry, we're here to make light of everything.

ESFI is excited to announce the theme for our National Electrical Safety Month 2023 campaign: “Electrification: E-Mobility.” The materials for this year’s campaign explain how the rapid advancements made to emerging technology, most notably electric vehicles, require further electrification and safe, efficient devices to support this increased energy demand.

“Oh look, we are talking about EVs again… “

ESFI recommends hiring a licensed electrician to install, repair, or upgrade your electrical systems to ensure electrical safety. Because let's face it, what could be more exciting than paying someone to do something you know nothing about?

ESFI also suggests correctly using electrical devices and appliances by reading and following the manufacturer's instructions and safety guidelines. And if all else fails, just plug everything in and hope for the best (joking).

Finally, ESFI reminds us to teach children about electrical safety from a young age. Because it's never too early to scare the living daylights out of them with the dangers of electricity. Who needs bedtime stories when you can have electrical accident horror stories?

In conclusion, let's all gather 'round and celebrate National Electrical Safety Month by practicing safe electrical practices, hiring licensed electricians, and scaring the daylights out of our children. Because nothing says "party" like an excellent electrical safety lesson.

Guac? Guac?
